Agents Can Now Do What Apps Used To Do

AI agents are becoming remarkably good at answering complex questions about your business. Ironically, this may be part of the reason users are becoming more frustrated with them: the better agents get at finding useful information and identifying problems, the more obvious it becomes when they can't help you do anything about what they find.

For example, ask an agent to show you the open work orders for your team, and it might quickly tell you that 17 are overdue. Great. Now what? If you want to sort through those work orders, drill into a specific record, update a status, or reassign one to another technician, you're often right back where you started: leaving the conversation, opening another application, finding the right screen, and picking up the process from there. The agent did its job, but it left you with more work to do.

This is a ceiling that users are increasingly running into. A useful answer naturally creates a desire to take the next step. As agents get better at providing those answers, users expect them to help with what comes next. They don't just want a chatbot that can tell them what's happening. They want a tool that can help them respond to it.

That's what makes Microsoft's new Power Apps MCP tools functionality so interesting. It gives agents a way to tap into the tables, forms, and other experiences built with Power Apps, creating a new bridge between conversational AI and the business applications organizations already depend on. And because Power Apps can sit on top of systems like SAP, Oracle, Dynamics 365, and countless other enterprise platforms, those experiences don't have to be limited to data that originated in Power Apps and Dataverse.

In this article, we'll take a closer look at the Power Apps MCP tools functionality and why it represents more than another way to connect AI to enterprise data. We'll explore how it can bring live tables, forms, and custom experiences directly into agent conversations, how it can extend the value of existing Power Apps and core business systems, and why it points toward a future where the system brings the work to the user instead of the other way around.

From Answers to Experiences

Let's start with the basics. Put simply, Power Apps MCP tools builds on new extensions to the Model Context Protocol (MCP) to enable Microsoft 365 Copilot and other compatible agents to tap into the tables, forms, and other experiences you've already built in Power Apps. The goal is to create immersive agent experiences by bringing pieces of these Power Apps applications directly into the conversation flow.

To put this into perspective, consider the work order example from earlier. Instead of simply telling the service manager that five work orders are at risk, the agent can return an interactive table containing those records. The manager can search and filter the results, select a work order to see more detail, and pull up a form to make changes right there on the spot. Instead of getting an answer and then going somewhere else to act on it, the experience continues right where the conversation started.

To be clear, the goal here is not to reproduce entire applications inside of a chat window. Instead, it's about giving agents access to the right piece of the application at the right time. Sometimes that's a table. Sometimes it's a form. And, as we'll explore later, it can also be a custom interactive experience designed around a particular task.

That's what makes these tools more interesting than simply giving an agent another way to access data. Power Apps MCP tools give agents access to pieces of the user experience built around that data. From the end user's perspective, agent experiences should start feeling less like chatting with a system and more like working with one.

Tables You Can Actually Work With

Think about what happens today when you ask a typical chatbot to retrieve a set of business records. The response usually comes back as text: a paragraph summarizing what it found, a bulleted list, or perhaps a small table containing the first handful of results. That works well when there are three records. It gets considerably less useful when there are 30, 300, or 3,000.

Power Apps MCP tools provide a much more natural way to handle these scenarios. Instead of trying to squeeze the results into a traditional chat response, the agent can surface a live, interactive table directly inside the conversation. As the Microsoft example in Figure 1 illustrates, users can sort columns, apply filters, paginate through the results, and select individual records to drill into additional detail.

This feature becomes particularly powerful when combined with the flexibility of natural language queries. Imagine asking, "Show me all open work orders in the Southwest region that are scheduled for this week, have a priority of high or critical, and haven't been assigned to a technician." Rather than translating the answer into prose or listing the first ten matches, the agent can translate that request into the appropriate query and give the user a working view of the results.

From there, the experience doesn't have to stop at viewing data. Users can continue refining the list, drill into the records that need attention, and process those records from within the agent experience. The agent effectively handles the work of getting the user to the right data, while the familiar grid experience gives them the tools to explore it and decide what to do next.

Forms That Come to You

Enterprise software has traditionally worked on a pretty simple model: you go to the system to find the work. Need to update a customer? Open the CRM. Need to process a purchase order? Go to the ERP. Need to create a service request? Find the right application, navigate to the right screen, and enter the information.

Power Apps MCP tools start to flip that model on its ear. Instead of requiring users to go find the right form, the form can come to them at the moment it's needed. It's a modern work miracle!

The Microsoft example shown in Figure 2 below demonstrates how this works. Here, a user is working on a refund request and simply asks the agent to create a new issue from it. Rather than sending the user off to another application, Copilot surfaces the appropriate Power Apps form directly within the conversation. Even better, it uses the context already available to prepopulate fields such as the booking, issue type, description, and date. The user can review the information, make any necessary adjustments, and save the record without ever having to leave the agent.

This is a subtle but important change in how we think about user experiences. Users don't necessarily need (or in many cases want) to know which application owns the process, where the right screen lives, or even which fields need to be populated. They can describe what they want to accomplish, and the agent can bring the appropriate business experience to them with much of the tedious data entry already completed.

From Insight to Action

This kind of approach also creates an important bridge between insight and action. As agent landscapes continue to mature, organizations are investing heavily in building out knowledge graphs that can supply an ever-growing army of agents with the insights they need to operate more autonomously.

While human beings still sit at the center of this loop, future-state process flows will probably look more like the three-way weave shown in Figure 3 below. Business events trigger autonomous agents to handle routine processing, with those agents taking on an increasing share of the day-to-day workload. An agent might process invoices, monitor inventory levels, coordinate maintenance activities, or keep an eye on customer service issues without requiring someone to initiate every step.

When something falls outside the normal flow and requires judgment, clarification, or approval, the autonomous agent can effectively "phone a friend" by bringing a human into the loop through a conversational agent. Maybe an invoice is overdue and needs an exception approved. Inventory has dropped below a critical threshold and a buyer needs to decide how to respond. A piece of equipment requires attention before the agent can proceed. Or a customer issue has escalated to the point where someone needs to make a judgment call.

The important difference is that the system doesn't just tell the user there's a problem. It can bring the appropriate form, record, and context along with it, giving the user the tools to respond immediately. The underlying application is still there, along with its data, business rules, and security. But instead of receiving an alert, hunting down the right application, and navigating to the right screen, the user can make the decision or update the record right there in the conversation. Once it's handled, they can get back to whatever they were doing before.

Beyond Tables and Forms

Tables and forms cover a surprising amount of ground in enterprise software, but they get stuffy after a while. Sometimes the best way to interact with a business process is through a chart, timeline, map, dashboard, scheduler, or another purpose-built experience. That's where the new custom tools feature takes things up a notch.

With the new generate-mcp-apps-ui skill, we can create custom MCP tools and pair them with interactive widgets designed specifically for the task at hand. Instead of forcing every response into text, a table, or a standard form, the agent can surface a richer interface directly inside the conversation. A maintenance agent might display equipment history on a timeline. A logistics agent could visualize shipments on a map. A project agent might return an interactive schedule. A sales agent could provide a compact dashboard showing an account's pipeline, recent activity, and outstanding opportunities.

These experiences can also work together. A user might start by asking for a set of records, refine those results using the live table experience, and then ask the agent to visualize what they're seeing. The agent can use one tool to retrieve the underlying business data and another to transform it into an interactive visualization that's better suited to the question.

This opens the door to something much more flexible than trying to recreate a traditional application inside Copilot. The interface can change based on what the user is trying to accomplish. Ask a question and you might get text. Ask for records and you get a table. Need to make a change and a form appears. Ask to understand the bigger picture and the agent can bring in a purpose-built visualization.

The result is an agent experience that can increasingly assemble the right combination of information, controls, and visualizations around the task at hand. Instead of designing one application experience and expecting it to work for every situation, we're starting to give the agent a toolbox of UI components it can bring forward as they're needed.

Closing Thoughts

The Power Apps MCP tools are interesting on their own, but the bigger story is where we seem to be headed with agent experiences. As agents become a more common place for work to begin, the applications behind them don't disappear. Their capabilities simply become available in new places. Tables, forms, business rules, security, and custom experiences can increasingly come to the user instead of requiring the user to go find them.

That creates an especially interesting opportunity for organizations with years of investment in ERP, CRM, and other core business systems. Those systems don't necessarily need to be replaced or completely redesigned for an agentic world. Power Apps can provide a modern experience layer over those systems, while integration and APIs provide access to the underlying business processes. MCP then creates another way for those capabilities to reach users. This pragmatic approach can go a long way towards helping you sweat those legacy assets.

It also reinforces why good UX design still matters. Giving agents access to more data isn't the same as giving users a good way to work with it. Someone still needs to think carefully about which information should be exposed, how users should interact with it, what actions should be available, and where human judgment belongs in the process. The interfaces may be changing, but the fundamentals aren't.
